Enterprise is set about 100 years before TOS, before the United Federation of Planets even exists. I know that a lot of people aren’t fond of Enterprise, but it is my favorite of all of the Star Treks. Starting with Season 3, the series committed to seasonal story arcs, building on what came before to more deeply develop the characters and the issues they face. Some of the episodes can be particularly dark as the captain, Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and the crew make difficult decisions without the guiding principles of the Prime Directive in a galaxy where almost everything is new to the explorers.
