What TV To Watch

Show Genre: Alternative Reality

Jessica Jones

Part of the Defenders group of mild super hero shows. Gritty, hard-drinking female superhero surrounded by interesting female characters.  It starts slow, stick with it. Season One featured one of the creepiest villains ever, played by the charming David Tennant.  Season Two suffered by comparison without a great villain. Seasons Two and Three did not …

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Witty, funny, clever, sexy – while Season 1 starts off slow, this story of a vampire slayer and her friends as they navigate high school while dodging demons, vampires and popular girls is a true icon of geekdom.  Awesome in every way and a geek cultural touchstone. Sexy British vampires!

Black Mirror

Each episode is a stand-alone that shows a different dystopian future.  Each of the episodes explores an aspect of technology taken to a frightening/disturbing outcome.  Excellently done, compelling, thought provoking and very difficult to watch.  Not recommended for bingeing.

The Handmaid’s Tale

This devastating adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic is compelling television.  Set in an alternative present day where far-right Christians took over the US, creating the religious state of Gilead.  Women have limited allowed roles – including Handmaid – a concubine for the leaders.  This expands on Atwood’s original narrative in thought provoking ways.

Colony

This series is set in the near future, where the earth has been occupied by aliens.  Will Bowman (Josh Holloway) is given a job he cannot refuse with the Occupation, while his wife (Sarah Wayne Callies) works with the resistance.  This series poses hard questions regarding what it takes to survive in the face of …

Sense8

Created by the Wachowskis and J Michael Strazynski, this series tells the story of eight people who were born at the same instant who can share thoughts and experiences.  Confusing at first, this series sucks you in.  Occasionally beautiful, often confusing, sometimes preachy – engrossing with characters you will grow to love. Dive in all …

The Magicians

Set in the present day, it turns out that magic is real. This show follows a group of students at Brakebills University, a graduate school for magicians. The first couple of seasons weren’t that enjoyable as the characters are self-centered, thoughtless and generally unpleasant. They blunder into mistake after mistake. Season 3 is a major …

Legion

This show is great, but really, really confusing (hence the high emo score).  It must be binged.  The Interwebz tells me that this is an X-Men spinoff.  It tells the story of David Haller (yes, that’s Dan Stevens).  David is insane, or maybe he isn’t.  He might or might not have special powers.  He sees …

Doctor Who

One of the longest running shows on television, start with the 2005 reboot with Christopher Eccelston as the Doctor.  Riding around time and space in the TARDIS, usually with a companion or two in tow, the Doctor fights monsters, solves conundrums and saves the day over and over again.  With frequent changes in Doctors and …

Humans

Set in a world very much like this one, but there are lifelike robots called Synths owned by most households and businesses. Unbeknownst to most, some synths attain consciousness.  This series explores what it means to be an individual and whether the robots are people or property.
