What TV To Watch

Show Genre: Drama

Succession

This drama follows the machinations of a wildly wealthy family (ala Rupert Murdoch) in which the patriarch refuses to step down. His children are continually thrown off balance as they try to curry favor with their powerful and unpredictable father.  No one, NO ONE is likeable but it is impossible to look away. I’ll admit …

Undone

Difficult to categorize: one of the main questions for the viewer is whether this is science fiction or just a story of a troubled person. The Night Manager

The night manager of a hotel (Tom Hiddleston) is recruited by an MI-6 intelligence operative (Olivia Coleman) to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer (Hugh Laurie).  Gorgeously acted but sometimes a little slow moving – the friendly menace of Hugh Laurie’s portrayal is chilling.

Jack Ryan

Political spy thriller on Amazon with John Krazinski as the lead.  Well-made and well-acted with Krazinski bringing heart and mind to the character.  Enjoyable to watch in the moment but once it is done it is done. The first season was better than the second.  The second had some stupidity-driven plot and too-convenient coincidences.

Quiz

Re-enactment of the scandal (or not) surrounding a winner of the UK “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” Matthew McFayden plays the Army Major who won the million dollars but then was accused of cheating.  This show does not provide any easy answers.

A Very English Scandal

Dramatization of a true scandal in which an English MP (Hugh Grant) conspired to have someone kill his gay lover (Ben Wishaw).  Well written and acted, but a frustrating and terrible true story.

Flesh and Blood

Present day drama set on the coast of England.  When the recently widowed Vivien meets and falls in love with a new man, her adult children are dubious, particularly when the relationship seems to be moving fast. The story is told in flashback after an event – we aren’t clear what exactly happened, but the …

Gentleman Jack

Historical drama loosely based on the real life of Anne Lister, a woman in 1830s Yorkshire who lived openly as a lesbian, even taking a wife.  It’s fine, but Anne sometimes seems a bit manipulative – which is better than having a perfect protagonist, but means we’re not always rooting for her.  Also, I never …
