What TV To Watch

Show Genre: Police Procedural

Mare of Eastown

Kate Winslet stars as a detective in a hardscrabble Pennsylvania town.  She isn’t likeable and does things that are reprehensible, but this unflinching look at a woman trying to deal with family, her job, and her place in a small town while trying to solve a murder is compelling watching. The unique Delco accent is …

Broadchurch – British

British police procedural – David Tennant and Olivia Coleman as the detectives.  The interplay between the two detectives and the people in the small town where the murder occurs, the families affected by the murder and the story telling are all excellent. Don’t be fooled by the American remake.

The Wire

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Set in the 1920s, Miss Fisher, a wealthy Australian woman, solves murders for fun and is a constant thorn in the side of handsome Inspector Jack Robinson.  Serious costume porn.  A fun romp, but don’t expect anything surprising or deep.

Sherlock

Remake of the Sherlock Holmes story set in present day London with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson.  So good.  Andrew Scott as Moriarty kills it.

Endeavour

Part of the “Inspector Morse” series of shows, this show is set in the ‘60s and shows Morse as a young man. Earnest and serious but prone to political missteps that hold him back, Morse solves murders in and around Oxford.

Unforgotten

British cold case mystery series with interesting and complex stories, a no-nonsense female lead detective and her loyal right hand man, Sunny.

The Sinner

In the first season, Jessica Biel plays an ordinary young wife and mother who suddenly erupts in anger at a young man at the beach and kills him. The show pieces together her past to reach the devastating reason why she did what she did.  In the second season, the same detective from the first …

Landscapers

This odd miniseries tells the true story of Chris and Susan Edwards, a middle-aged couple in England who were convicted of murdering her parents and burying their bodies in the back garden. Excellently acted by Olivia Coleman and David Thewlis, the series moves around in time and plays with various methods of storytelling as it …

Laetitia

A re-creation of the true story of the disappearance and murder of a young woman in France in 2011. While on the surface a murder mystery, the story turns into an indictment of how the foster system in France failed the young woman and her twin sister on every level. In French, with subtitles.
