The Man in the High Castle

What if Japan and Germany won WWII, and the allied powers lost?  This series takes place in the 1960s in what used to be America – the Eastern half a Nazi stronghold, the Western run by the Japanese.  The characters begin to find film snippets that show a different reality – one where the allied …

Stranger Things

Popular horror series about kids in the 1980s that captured the zeitgeist.  I personally didn’t find it all that frightening, but I know others who found it truly creepy.  Season 2 was gory in places.  I enjoyed watching it at the time, but as soon as I was done couldn’t remember much about it.  The …

Lost

A plane crashes on an island, and the survivors soon discover they aren’t alone.  They spend the next six seasons trying to figure out the secrets of the strange place they’ve landed.  Twists and turns galore, with surprises around every tree. Has the worst finale EVER.

Carnival Row

Well-made but ultimately heavy-handed show set in a steampunk universe with fae and other creatures.  Political intrigue and a police detective investigating a series of murders in a world with both dirigibles and fairies. The problem is that the show has a Message (prejudice against immigrants is Bad) that is a subtle as an anvil, …

The Boys

In a world where there are superheroes, absolute power corrupts absolutely and behind the shiny façade, some of the superheroes are sociopathic assholes. This show follows a group of ordinary men who band together to expose the myth of the superhero.   Great story, but wildly (beyond the anything) graphic violence.

In the Flesh

What happens if the zombie apocalypse starts but someone finds a cure?  This show follows a Partially Deceased Syndrome sufferer as he attempts to reintegrate into his village – which is awkward and difficult when he’d been trying to eat his neighbors’ brains recently.  Suffice it to say that not everyone is thrilled to have …

Invasion

Slow burn show about an extraterrestrial invasion of Earth.  The primary problem with the first season of this show is that most of the characters remain focused on their pre-invasion problems – which, I don’t know – I’m thinking that the fact that THERE ARE ALIENS INVADING FROM SPACE AND KILLING EVERYONE, might prove a …

Foundation

I liked this adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series.  Full disclosure, I didn’t love the books, so I was very happy with the changes made – the premise is that the Galatic Empire that has existed for millenia is coming to an end and a group of humans creates a Foundation to preserve culture and …

Star Trek – The Original Series

Kirk, Spock and McCoy on the original five-year mission.  Much of it didn’t hold up well, but everyone has to watch TOS all the way through at least once.

Star Trek:  The Next Generation

A substantial improvement on TOS, TNG got really good starting in the third season. There are some great episodes and some real stinkers, but the quality is generally high, and Picard, Riker, Data and the gang are interesting characters.
